The Five Pillars of Mystery of our church

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.

Introduction

The phrase “the Five” signifies that they are five in number. As it is written in 1 Corinthians 14:19:

“I would rather speak five words with my understanding…”

The word “pillars” signifies the main supports of a structure. Just as pillars uphold a house and bear its weight, so also these are the essential pillars upon which our faith stands.

They are called “mysteries” because they are revealed by God through His Spirit to those who love Him and believe in His name. As taught in Luke 10:22 and Matthew 11:25, these divine truths are made known not by human wisdom alone, but by God’s own revelation.

For this reason, many teachers and scholars of the Church have taught that these belong to the firm and foundational doctrine of the faith.

The Five Pillars of the Mysteries are these:

1. The Mystery of the Trinity

The first is the Mystery of the Holy Trinity: to believe that the Trinity is three in person, yet one in essence, nature, and being. Though One, He is Three; and though Three, He is One.

The Godhead is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three are named distinctly, yet they are one God.

As it is written in Matthew 28:19–20:

“Go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Thus we distinguish the Three without dividing their unity, and we confess their unity without confusing their distinction. This is the Mystery of the Trinity.

See also Sirach 3:22.

2. The Mystery of the Incarnation

The second is the Mystery of the Incarnation: to believe that God became man, and man was united to God; that the Invisible became visible, the Subtle took on flesh, the Fullness accepted limitation, and the Boundless entered into measure.

He is the Son of God, who has two births:

  • before the world, from the Father;
  • and in these latter days, from Our Lady, the Holy Virgin.

To confess this is to believe that the Son of God is truly God, who for our sake took flesh.

As it is written in John 1:14:

“The Word became flesh.”

And in Psalm 2:7:

“You are My Son; today I have begotten You.”

This is the Mystery of the Incarnation.

3. The Mystery of Baptism

The third is the Mystery of Baptism. When the priest completes the rite and blesses the water, that water becomes sanctified and is believed to be made a vessel of divine grace, like the life-giving water that flowed from the side of Christ on the day of His Passion.

Through this baptism we receive adoption as children of the Trinity and the remission of sins.

This faith is according to John 3:1–8, Titus 3:5, and 1 Peter 3:21.

This is the Mystery of Baptism.

4. The Mystery of Holy Communion

The fourth is the Mystery of Holy Communion. When the priest places the bread upon the paten and the wine in the chalice, and blesses them through the prayer of the Divine Liturgy, the bread is changed into the Body of the Son of God, and the wine is changed into the Blood of the Son of God.

As taught in John 6:51–58 and 1 Corinthians 11:23–34, by eating and drinking this mystery, we receive the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and the Kingdom of Heaven.

To believe this is to confess the truth of the Holy Eucharist.

This is the Mystery of Holy Communion.

5. The Mystery of the Resurrection

The fifth is the Mystery of the Resurrection: to believe that after man has died and his body has decayed, he shall rise again, taking body anew.

1 Corinthians 15:35 to the end / 1 Thessalonians 4:13 to the end

At the Sounding of the First Trumpet

At the sounding of the first trumpet, the dust of the body, scattered in every place, shall be gathered together to the place of the skull.

At the Sounding of the Second Trumpet

At the sounding of the second trumpet, the flesh and the bones shall come together and be formed into a lifeless body.

At the Sounding of the Third Trumpet

At the sounding of the third trumpet, the dead shall rise, in the twinkling of an eye, in the body given to them by God.

And He shall reward each one according to his works.

Revelation 22:12

This is called the General Resurrection. And we place our hope in the Second Coming of our Lord.

Conclusion

The faith of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is manifested in these Five Pillars of Mystery.

To believe in these dogmas makes one a true and faithful believer.

To deny them puts one outside the faith, separates one from it, and brings condemnation upon him, making him a heretic.

Galatians 1:9

Therefore, these truths must be learned, studied, and believed daily, being pursued ever more deeply, matured in understanding, and more clearly discerned.

Hebrews 11:6

Glory be to God, and to His Mother the Virgin, and to His honored Cross.
